I’m thrilled that these design aesthetics have shown up in current interior trends, distinguished by sleek geometry, mirrored surfaces and streamlined shapes.  You can see much of this in vintage Hollywood – it epitomizes the glamour of the silver screen.  The 1920s was the era of the modern woman: smart, independent and glamorous.  It was also really the first time interior designers became widely hired within the home.  Think polished furniture, crystal lighting and silky fabrics to reflect your own Roaring 20s style.

Here are 7 essential interior decorating items to add a 1920s flair to your modern-woman-gone-flapper style.

1 – Mirrored Furnishings and Wall Art

The thing I really love about mirrors is that they can open up a smaller space.  Consider a few pieces that are mirrored to add a real statement to a room.  If you are feeling crafty, you can even make your own with this tutorial on how to make a mirrored mosaic table. http://www.bhg.com/decorating/makeovers/furniture/make-a-mosaic-mirrored-table/

2 – Art Deco Style Artwork

A lot of the artwork at the time was simple shapes and lines. Think block prints, cubism and product posters.  For instance, this famous poster of a black cat was really an advertisement from a restaurant/club that still exists in Paris today. I also really love Erte’s costume design prints.

3 – Glossy/Laquered Furniture

Laquerware became hugely popular in the 1920s, since it gave a hard, streamlined finish to furniture.  You’ve got to remember that at the time, people had their own, “new” look at what they considered to be futuristic and modern.  Black became a really popular color, followed by red.  For a really over the top look, consider a piece that is both laquered AND mirrored.  Make sure it really has a Deco look, though, because if you aren’t careful it can fall back into 1980s silliness.

4 – Glamourous lighting details

Its really all about the chandelier – and you can even see that below in the jewelry I highlighted.  Think draped crystals and soft bulbs.  I’m all about this crazy Swarovski thing from Period Lighting, but if you want something a little sleeker, try this piece by Restoration Hardware.  Area lamps can run the gamut from Louis Tiffany inspired stained glass lamps to lamps that merge sculpture and functionality like this dancer lamp inspired by Erte’s prints available from Design Toscano.

5 – Geometric Shapes

Just take a look at the poster for Luhrmann’s movie to see the geometric shapes and hard lines that make up the Deco style.  This is not to say that furniture shouldn’t be comfortable, but consider a geometric patterned wallpaper to accent one of the walls – I’ve suggested this beforehand in my posts and it can apply even here!

6 – Polished Metals

Its not really a big leap to go from the mirrors to polished metals.  Deco artwork has a masculine feel to go along with the feminine opulence, so think of adding a sleek-lined silver pitcher to your dining table centerpiece.

7 – Glass Accessories

Who doesn’t love the sharp lines and fabulous shapes of Swarovski crystal?  We’ve already talked about them regarding chanderliers and lighting, but take the look of glass onto your dining table with carnival glass goblets or onto your boudoir stand with a cut glass crystal perfume bottle?  Don’t have a boudoir stand?  Well, now is the best time to get one.  Remember, think mirrors and laquered wood!

1. Make sure the material you are using is clean and dry. 2. The zipper is located on the bottom of the pouf Unzip the pouf and open it out to its full shape. 3. Start by gradually filling the sides at the top of your pouf. 4. Continue stuffing evenly – add a layer of stuffing and push it down firmly (again, ensuring that the sides and seams are fully filled out) before moving on to add another layer.

5.Continue until the pouffe is full.

Please avoid over-filling your pouffe as this could put strain on the zip when closing.

I am always on the lookout for healthy snack for my family, here’s one I have on heavy rotation at home. Pita chips are light and crispy.They are perfect for dipping with hummus or baba ghannouj,  Here’s the basic recipe, but you can add thyme, garlic,zataar,  or any other spices you might like.

Ingredients:

• 3 large pita bread loaves
• 1/2 cup olive oil
• kosher salt

1.For a natural and youthful look this spring, pair your fashions with nude hues that are light and airy.  They can be either opaque or have a little bit of the metallic or glitter in them that I’ll show you below.

2.Metallics can come in any color now, but gold, silver and pearl colors are really in the top for the spring.  Another option to dress up your nails for an evening out is to brush 24 gold foil onto your existing nail color.    

3. Also good for your evening on the town, try a little bit of glitter.  This is also a less expensive way to get the 24 gold look I suggested above.  Chunky gold glitter gives the same look for a fraction of the cost.  Glitter polish comes in any color imaginable.  You can either brush it lightly on top of your existing nail polish, or for a really 3d effect try 4 coats of glitter polish with a clear coat ontop.  Since your polish will be pretty thick, remember to give it some extra drying time.

4.You mix it up by using the new duo color techniques.  Paint stripes onto your nails – you know I love bold stripes!  Kate Spade is showing Gingham this season on the runways and you can get this fancy look by using the new nail decals.  They are little stickers and last longer than you’d expect.  Just paint a base coat and press on the decal.  Trim it to the right size and go!

5. If you are going for a single color, then you can still stick to the classic reds or pinks.  However, for a little “pop,” consider the Pantone Fashion Institute runway color of the year (2013) is Emerald.  I really love to mix up the trends  with a metallic shiny green.  Another option for fun colors is gray or a light gray-blue.  And… you know I always love neons!

If you’re going to get your nails done professionally, then your stylist will probably ask whether you prefer round or square shapes. For the spring, natural rounded shapes are currently showing on the runways.

Here’s one of my favorite kid approve snack: Cauliflower Popcorn.  With only three ingredient not only this recipe simple but totally delicious.

• 1 head cauliflower
• 4 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 teaspoon salt, to taste
